This revolver was returned to the factory and re-shipped from Colt on January 31, 1896 (Colt letter) as a Coly Artillery.. The Ordnance Sub-Inspector for this series was A.P. Casey. The frame, trigger guard and butt-strap (faintly) of this Artillery display the original serial number # 192XX The barrel of this revolver is an original U.S. military barrel which was manufactured as a component of a Cavalry revolver during 1891. Its partial reconstructive serial number should read #137703. The Ordnance Sub-Inspector initials "R.A.C." of the Sub-inspector Rinaldo A. Carr, may be faintly observed on the underside of the barrel. The grips may have been original to this revolver as it had been refinished during 1896. A faint serial number "358" may be observed in the sunlight within the backstrap channel. Authentic Colt Archive Letter issued states: Finish is Blue, Delivered to U.S. Government Inspector at the Colt plant on January 31, 1896 and the shipment contained 400 guns. Colts records (Letter) indicate this revolver was returned for refurbishing and subsequent reshipment. The refurbishing consisted of replacement of worn parts, exterior refinish and reassembly. In addition, the majority of the revolvers refinished during this time frame had the barrels shortened to 5 1/2". The barrel measures 5 1/2” long and has a good bore. There is about 60% faded color case finish and 80% blue finish remaining. There are 4 clicks when cocking the hammer. Overall the gun appears to be in great working condition.
