Here is an ordinary looking Smith & Wesson Model 10. This plain Jane revolver, however, played an important role during the Vietnam War providing security for production of the A-7 Corsair Attack Jet and other aircraft and long range ordnance produced by Mr. Chance Vought’s LTV Aerospace Company in Dallas Texas. This one is LTV number 4, stamped on the grip frame butt opposite the serial number. This is, of course, the S&W .38 Special Military & Police, numbered model 10-5. Its C973000 range serial number dates this one to 1967. Surface detractions are moderate, principally weather and leather weakening to the finish on the side plate and grip frame. It has moderate amounts of whitening on the edge areas of the matte blued steel metal, and extensive browning on the grip frame’s back strap only. Barrel is 4 inch traditional service Pencil barrel with anchor pin through the frame and barrel threads. Both hammer and trigger are .265 service width, smooth combat trigger and serrated traditional hammer. Both of them have fairly strong original case coloring mixed with moderate amounts of brown toning. We rate this 10-7 as Very Good, 80 percent vicinity by our estimate. Photos, at any rate, ought to suffice for our distinguished shoppers to judge finish grade for themselves. This .38 Special Military & Police is Excellent mechanically. Blast effect to the underside of the frame top strap directly above the barrel’s forcing cone is negligible, only a faint etchy streak with no depth that traverses less than half the width of the top strap, as the photos show. This Model 10 has fired few if any +P rounds. Bore, cylinder chambers and mechanism are all bright, clean, and excellent. Double action trigger pull is smooth and consistent, and the hammer travels 5 to 10 degrees after the cylinder times in all six positions on Double Action. On single action, the hammer travels fully 30 degrees on all six after timing, and the single action trigger pull is a crisp original 3 5/8 pounds. Grips are period correct factory Service Magna type. Replacement pricing on new Model 10s is $600 apiece or more if a person can even find one; and all of them have the suspect two-piece barrels.
