As far as we know it is complete, just needs the attention of a competent gunsmith, of which we are neither. Here is an attractive Remington 582 Rifle, the plain Jane version of the legendary 541S Custom Sporter. Manufacturer was Remington Arms of Ilion, NY. Catalog number was 9856. Production ran from 1967 until 1983 only. From its ER date code, it was manufactured in October of 1968, Second Year of Production. Barrel underside is importer stamped, forward of the magazine cap. Type is tube fed bolt action rimfire target rifle. Construction is steel metal, with American hardwood stock: only the sight shroud and butt plate are polymer. Caliber is .22 Short, Long, or Long Rifle, and barrel is so marked. Barrel is 24 inch one piece medium tapered, .615 outside diameter at the muzzle; .625 osd at the forend. Muzzle is round crowned; and rifling is six groove right hand 1:16. Magazine is half tube type, outer steel with inner brass. It holds 20 Shorts, or 15 Longs, or 14 Long Rifle, so 20 + 1 fully loaded capacity on Shorts. Sights are dovetailed front blade, and shroud protected screw on rear that is windage and elevation adjustable. Receiver has 1 inch plus 2 inches of 5/8 grooves for scope rings. Bolt is three piece with dual extractors, exactly the same action as the 541S Custom Sporter, a point we never failed to make when we had these in their racks in our store 40 years ago. Trigger is .325 smooth faced steel, but is frozen in the fired or depressed condition, which is also the position to release the bolt. Safety is right side of the bolt, forward fire and rearward safe. Stock is one piece hardwood, with 1 1/2 by 3 inch drop past the Monte Carlo; 13 3/8 inch length of pull; and 3/4 inch right hand cast. Overall length is 42 3/8 inches. Weight empty is 5 pounds 7 ounces, centered 1 inch forward of the breech face. Finish is brushed surface blued steel, gloss black polymer, and plain or satin finish stained hardwood. Apart from its hopefully minor mechanical issued, Surface detractions on this Remington are moderate, principally a mar on the left side of the stock. Apart from that, it has faint edge wear, freckling on the trigger guard, and occasional scouring on the stock. We rate this rifle as Very GoodCondition, 85 percent vicinity by our estimate. Photos, at any rate, ought to suffice for our distinguished shoppers to judge finish grade for themselves. We estimate a doctor bill of $100 or less from a professional gunsmith.
