James Purdey & Sons has built fine side-by-side shotguns in the UK since 1814. Well into its 2nd century with 3 Royal Warrants, Purdey builds only about 75 guns a year, all of uncompromising quality. The BQGG is their flagship SxS. Introduced in 1880, it is still made today. Every gun is “bespoke” (custom-built) to buyer specifications. These guns have been the choice of numerous crowned heads, sporting gentlemen, and discerning upland shooters world-wide for over a century. The BQGG side-by-sides hark back to an era of elegance in upland hunting. Simple to use with their “self-opening” actions, nimble, and rugged, these classy doubles are ideally suited to that purpose. The light receiver and balanced, slim 28” barrels make a responsive package with excellent shouldering, control, and follow-through characteristics.

This 12 ga specimen is a fine example of Purdey workmanship – richly blued barrels, engraved case-hardened receiver, and well-figured premium walnut. All serial numbers match. Purdey's Beesely “self-opening” action, used since 1880, speeds reloads by popping the action open as soon as the thumb latch unlocks it. Auto ejectors kick shells from the 2 ¾” chambers and reset the safety. The proofed 0.729” 12g bores are choked IC (right) and M (left). Handling is excellent, with the balance point at the hinge. Dual triggers inside the blued and engraved trigger guard control independent internal side-lock actions. Lavish floral engraving covers the entire case-hardened receiver, side-plates, and major screws. A muzzle bead mounted on a ¼”, textured full-length mid rib gives a basic sight picture. Crafted from richly figured dark European walnut with a prominent cross-grain, the straight-grip stock and splinter fore-end are hand-finished to a soft luster and superbly fit to the metal. Hand checkering adorns the wrist, fore-end, and butt of the stock. The hard case is heavy, leather covered wood with a fitted interior. A vintage Abercrombie & Fitch (A&F) canvass cover protects the case.

Manufactured in 1968 thereabouts (s/n 275xx), this shotgun is in NRA (modern) Very Good condition. The gun seems in good working order. Triggers function properly, and the ejectors work as expected. The action is extremely smooth with solid lock up, and the gun comes apart easily. Receiver original case colors are not as vibrant as new, but are still clear. Blues and ambers dominate on a mottled gray-green background, giving the receiver a distinctly rich and almost blued aspect. Lettering and engraving are 100% sharp and clear. Screw heads are timed in Excellent condition, and no dings or mars appear on the metal. Overall receiver finish condition is about 80%, which matches that of the barrels. In normal light the barrels still show rich, deep bluing except for light muzzle wear, but strong, focused light reveals thin wisps of a starting plum patina through the blue. A few light dings, scuffs and mars show on the barrel steel, mostly on the outer barrel contours and under the fore end contact surfaces. The bore is mirror-bright. Wood finish is easily 99%. The few issues noted are less than ½-doz small stock dents that do not break the surface and can be seen only in oblique light, and a few finish smudges mostly on the stock's right. Checkering, including the butt, is 100% except for one broken facet on the right wrist. Hard case and accessory condition matches that of the gun although the A&F canvas protective cover has seen better days.
