The serial number, 364xxx. The very sharp cartouche is stamped 1886 with the correct inspectors initials. The metal retains 97%+ blue with some small scratches on the barrel, some fading near the muzzle, and light marks on the lock plate where the Eagle logo is bold. The case colors are vivid and the inside areas of the breech make this rifle look unfired. The bore is perfect, shiny with strong lands/grooves. The trigger guard has a small ding/scratch in the bow but still has the same 96+ bluing. Buffington rear sight that looks like it was never moved and a hooded front sight which was, from my research, ordered by the commander of the unit and not a standard issued item. The bands are stamped with the correct U marking. The blue on the US stamped butt plate is 98% with just some light fading on a small portion. The wood is in the same condition or better as the metal. It has the serif P behind the trigger guard tang. No cracks, splits, gouges, or deep scratches. There are some handling marks and some small pressure dents in front of the top band but other than those the stock and its factory finish are above what I have been able to find. It has an 1886 stamped leather sling attached. The fit and finish of this rifle are the best I have seen in my research of other comparable rifles. This rifle looks as though it was put into storage and the small imperfections it has were acquired by age and handling, not use in the field. I have seen lesser examples in museums.
