Description: Attention Civil War , especially Ohio collectors. This is an 1861 model Springfield rifled musket Id'ed to Joseph T. Pack Company H of the 65th Ohio Regiment. Joseph was mustered into the service on November 11th, 1861. He was mustered out on November 30th, 1865 at Victoria TX. He served with the Army of Ohio and the Army of the Cumberland. During that time his regiment, the Ohio 65th, were in 31 major engagements. The most notable battles according to the Official Army Register include but are not limited to: Shiloh, Corinth, Stones River, Chickamauga, Chattanooga, Missionary Ridge, Rock Face Ridge, Resaca, Adairville Creek,New Hope Church, Kennesaw Mountain, Big Shanty, Peachtree Creek, Atlanta, Jonesboro, Spring Hill, and Franklin. His regiment also fought at Nashville but that was after his discharge date. This musket, acguired by me originally from an auction near Finley Ohio in 2012 included some attached ID information. I have that posted here as one of my pictures. The Id tag reads: " Civil War Rifle Muzzleloading used by Joseph T. Pack Sr. 1. Nov.-Nov. Grandfather of Mary E Pack Riggs Kopple". Yes indeed, this soldier served in all 4 years of the war and saw some pretty nasty battles for sure. The rifle is a standard 1861 Springfield musket, it had been used and has great patina. The hammer is frozen on half cock. The nipple is damaged and frozen in place. There is some missing wood near the nipple due to black powder residue/ erosion. The rear swivel on the trigger guard for the strap is present but also frozen. But the front swivel and rear sight is missing. All barrel bands are there as well as the front sight. A small bit of wood is missing along the left top between the 2nd and 3rd barrel bands. But it's really old, not new at all. What's that story I wonder? The bore is not rusty or damaged. It is clear but dark. There is little to no rifling left. The caliber was .58 on these and the Springfield " 63's". There are actually two (2) cartuche stamps visible. I think you can see them on one of my pic's here. The metal rings around the screw heads that come through from the left side, back lock are missing. You can see that as well on the pic. There is no original ram rod. Really just a stick of sorts. The gun itself is in good relic found condition I would say., but it's not the overall condition of this piece that is the big thing. I believe it is the story that it tells.Using that initial info that I referred to earlier,I have generated documentation to support everything that I am stating in this " for sale" post. Another picture included here shows the first page of that subsequent research. This documentation folder contains Pack's service info, the Department or Army 's he served with and dates, the total engagements of is regiment, regimental casualty records incurred in these engagements as well as a wonderful , colorful Regimental history of the 65th Ohio infantry. There are a great many details in this history especially about Shiloh, Stones River (Murfreesboro), Chickamauga, Chatanooga and Atlanta. This is a great piece of history for any Civil War or Ohio collector.
