Percussion Carbine, also known as the “No. 56,” or “56-56.” Original 22" six- groove barrel with a 7+1 rim fire cartridge capacity through the butt stock to the chamber. The Model 1860 was manufactured from 1 (the serial numbers started at 11,000 and went up to 61,000). This one has matching serial numbers of 53870 on the breech and underside of the barrel, behind the forearm. The lock is strong and the action lockup is tight on both half and full cock, with absolutely no play. The tubular magazine is original, complete and functions freely in the buttstock. The metal is smooth with a nice light gray patina. The bore is shiny and shows good rifling. The wood is in nice condition with just the usual handling marks. No major cracks or repairs. Very rare Civil War collectible. After the Civil War, over 11,000 1860 carbines were converted to metallic cartridge; this gun wasn't. This Civil War carbine, as well as others like it, remained un-touched and un-altered, and were used by the military and civilians, including the American Indians, outlaws and law enforcement throughout the American West. There is no telling who originally owned this carbine during the Civil War and afterwards. It has quite a history to tell, if it could only talk.
