Description: There are engravers & then there are engravers. Not everyone who chisels steel is skilled & experienced enough to transform the steel into a living testament to the mastery of their chosen art form. Kurt Jaeger was such an engraver, a Master Engraver. At some time in the late 1940s, he invested an unknown number of hours creating an engraving masterwork based on one S&W Victory model revolver. This is that revolver. Should it be a corner stone for your collection?

A sought-after WWII era Victory revolver made between 1942 & 1944. A 6-shot revolver with 4 inch barrel, chambered in .38 S&W Special. V-prefixed SN on the underside of its barrel & on the back of the cylinder. “P” proof mark follows SN under barrel & precedes the “V” on the cylinder. Matching assembly numbers stamped on frame & cylinder crane.

Kurt Jaeger profusely engraved this work of art with oak leaves & acorns (OLAA) & other embellishments & inlaid gold wire everywhere. He blued the steel & crafted fantastic German stag grips.

Barrel engraved on both sides of muzzle with OLAA; embellished with gold wire flourishes that wrap muzzle area & extend down both sides of barrel until the wires meet additional OLAA carved on both sides of barrel where it joins frame. Bands of small decorations ring barrel where it joins frame. Rows of herringbones run from base to muzzle on each side of barrel rib crafted onto the top of barrel.

Swept front sight sits on elegant ramp that is part of a full length rib. Rib is engraved over its entire length with a cross hatched pattern bordered on each side with long waves of engraving.

Engraving on the frame combines careful placement of OLAA, Germanic flourishes & finely formed & inlaid gold wire. The gold is bright & precious. All over the frame, panels of OLAA are bordered with gold; embellishments include rows & borders of tiny circles, elegant flourishes & graceful curves & swirls & crosshatched panels & herringbone rows. Front, bottom & rear of the grip straps are embellished fully. Top of frame is engraved with rows of flourishes bordered with gold wire along both sides of the sight channel.

Cylinder & crane carry OLAA panels bordered with gold wire. Cylinder flutes are left as smooth, blued steel. Rear of cylinder carries delicately engraved ornaments running in two parallel rows completely around the circumference. Gold wire borders the ornaments, a continuous line of gold in front of the ornament area & a series of gold wire segments along the rear edge of the cylinder. Front of the crane has OLAA. Cylinder release lever is crosshatch engraved in the area recessed for the thumb, around the attaching screw hole & across the front of the lever. Cylinder ejector rod end is engraved in a crosshatch pattern.

Bottom of the trigger guard combines a panel of OLAA with a gold wire border; a ring of tiny circles surrounds the front screw hole; OLAA & gold wire embellish the forward tip of the guard area. Two parallel rows of tiny circles border the edge of the underside of the frame as it curves from the trigger guard area to the front strap.

Hammer & trigger are embellished with brightly finished, swirled jeweling. Hammer thumb tang is crosshatched. Front of the trigger is vertically ribbed; back of the trigger is smooth & blued.

Grips are fully figured German stag with high ridges & contrasting brown coloring in the valleys; a wonderful matched pair that show the heart of the horn at their bases. They contour to the grip frame of the S&W as if they grew in place.

All visible screw heads are engraved. Left edge of the frame’s top strap is signed “KURT JAEGER MAINZ”.

Revolver is excellent as professionally embellished. Appears new since it left the hands of Kurt Jaeger. 99% + of blue finish remains. Gold work is fresh & bright. Minor edge wear. Almost invisible drag line on cylinder. Jeweling is fresh. Grips are exceptional. Custom wooden case; surface wear on bottom.
