Fox Sterlingworth 16 gauge Shotgun 28" barrels Guns > Shotguns > Fox Shotguns
Description: Super nice Fox Sterlingworth 16 gauge. The serial number dates this gun to somewhere in 1939. It has 28” barrels choked Full and HALF (LIGHT MOD) with constrictions of .027” and .012”, both bores measure .657”. The bores are factory original (chokes not opened up) and are bright and shiny inside, with no dents or bulges. The ribs are secure and the barrels ring true. VERY WELL struck barrels…as nice as I’ve seen. Most importantly, the chambers are factory 2 ¾”. The gun weighs 6 lbs 6 ozs. Length of pull is 14 ¼”. DAC 1 ½” DAH 2 5/8”. Very shootable dimensions. It balances just where the forend iron meets the forend wood. The swirl streaked wood grain is closer to A grade than Sterly, I would say. Note that Savage did away with the grip cap on these late 1930’s guns. Double triggers with automatic safety and extractors. Condition: This Sterlingworth has had a professional ‘light ‘ restoration consisting of cold rust re-bluing of the barrels and trigger guard (original Savage method, and all roll marking and serial numbers are still crisp). A freshening up of the varnish on the stock and forend were also completed. No cracks in the wood. The receiver retains most of its original vivid case colors, and the engraving is crisp and intact. The gun locks up tight and the barrels are on face. An important modification has been done to the wood structure between the tangs. Custom fabricated steel bushings have been installed and acraglassed in the holes where the lower tang screw passes through to the upper tang and also where the upper tang screw passes through to the triggerplate boss. This is a tried and true method that gunsmiths in my area (Utica and Ilion; read Savage,Fox,Remington, Parker) have been using for decades to strengthen most makes of doubles so they can be shot regularly without worry of splitting the stock. When the gun was new the stock didn’t need this. After 80 years most stocks have lost a lot of their natural oils leading to weakening. These bushings allow the screws to be torqued properly without risk of crushing the wood fibers or causing the tangs to “sink” below the surface of the surrounding wood. You’ve all seen a Fox or two where the screw aft of the safety is protruding up too proud? Big no no. They didn’t come that way from the factory. Someone overtightened that screw in soft (probably gun oil soaked) walnut. These bushings also supply a secure surface to help absorb the forces of recoil, again mitigating splitting. All internal end grain (which was in great condition on this Fox) has been sealed to stabilize the wood structure. I have an Ithaca Flues 12ga (1930s) and a LC Smith FW 12ga (1913) both with this modification. The Flues I use for cowboy action shooting. The LC I use for sporting clays and pheasants. Both are still tight with no cracks after several years of shooting. This gun is for the avid shooter who loves the 16 gauge. Maybe you are a bit contrarian? I am. Pheasants, chukars, Vintager meets….bang away worry free. Rainy day? No problem. It’s there to make memories with, not hang in the safe where Junior never gets a chance to learn what really makes a fine American double so cool. If you want an investment double, go buy the highest grade Fox in the smallest gauge in the highest original condition. And DON’T shoot it. In my opinion the 16 is the “Goldilocks Gauge”. Not too big, not too small, just right. MacIntosh and others have stated that the 16 Fox is the best balanced double out there, and partly due to it being built on a 20 gauge frame. The 28” barrels make this shotgun a joy to swing. Ask questions, I strive for honesty and fairness. NOW REDUCED to $1495.
