Description: Up for auction is a beautiful, vintage WW ll Enfield, a No. 4, Mark 1, made in America by Savage around 1943. The No. 4 series (the Mark 1 and the Mark 11) were the last iteration in the development of the British Lee-Enfield series of rifles that began around the turn of the last century. Lighter, faster handling, more accurate, and simpler to produce, the No. 4 series was a significant improvement over the earlier Mark 111 series of rifles. Used by the British army well into the 1960's--and the sniper version was used for a number of years after that-- the rifle earned nearly unanimous praise around the world as the best battlefield rifle of both world wars. It's 10-round magazine and lightning fast, butter smooth bolt action put it ahead of the competition in the eyes of many authorities: the Mauser '98, the Mosin-Nagant 91/30, the French Model 36, and even the venerable Springfield '03. But whatever your opinion about that, the Lee-Enfield is without question at the pinnacle of bolt-action, military rifle design. This outstanding example of the last and best version of the design shows a careful and exacting effort at rejuvenation: the lustrous walnut wood furniture retains the dark, rich color of the original; and the metal hardware reflects an equal effort at bringing the rifle back to its glory days (it's free of rust, pitting, frosting, and hazing; and the barrel still shows strong rifling). This fine example comes complete with bayonet and scabbard, new and period-correct sling, micrometer sights (much preferred by target shooters), and polished butt plate as well as polished bolt. This would make a wonderful addition to any military surplus rifle collection, and well as a fun weekend shooter at revival matches.
