This model of the Enfield dates from the World War 1 era when the British were trying to improve upon their SMLE to close the gap with the German Mauser 98. The start of the war forced the British to abandon any thought of replacing their "smelly" but they didn't give up all interest. They turned the development and production work over to the Americans, who in the end rechambered the rifle into the 30-06 and issued that version to many of the doughboys in France--Sgt. York, if I'm not mistaken, included. These are a wonderful battlefield rifle with superb sights and a smooth bolt action (thanks to Mauser). They have a 5-round internal magazine of .303 British. This old lady has seem some loyal and difficult service in her day, but still retains most of her charms: excellent bore, 90%+ bluing, a soft brown patina to the wood without cracks, gouges, or splits, bolt lugs like new, and factory specs on the headspace. Even has the battalion cartouche on the butt stock. Additional pictures upon request.
