M1 Garand, WWII Guns > Rifles > Springfield Armory Rifles > M1A/M14
Description: This auction is for one WWII Era M1 Garand battle rifle in .30-06 caliber. It is serial number 3322757 and it was manufactured in December of 1943 and saw action in the Agean Islands in the Greek campaign.  It has no Greek markings or import markings, only standard Springfield Armory markings. It has all Springfield Armory parts and original stock set with all pieces matching wood. Now for the condition... This rifle is over 60 years old and has seen action in a major campaign and has been around the world in battle and come back to us.  It is in good condition over all.  The stock, while it is matching original wood, has nicks and gouges along it but it is in solid condition and will not fail or split on you.  All the damage is very old and is cosmetic in nature.  There has been no sanding at all on the stock and it would be possible for a new owner to refinish it There is very little rust on any metal parts.  The area that had the most rust on it was the inside of the operating rod handle, but I removed much of it with carb cleaner and paper towels, no power tools.  The bore, sight assembly and all internal parts were and are free of rust and pitting as is the butt plate and sling swivels. Fitting of the parts is pretty good.  There is the normal amount of slop you find in service rifles but nothing is wobbly loose or unreliable.  There are no parts on the verge of breakdown and failure that would require expensive replacement on the part of the new owner.  The stock has the fit one would expect of a mass produced G.I. weapon from Springfield Armory.  It is as good as they could get it and turn out 100,000 per month to crush the Hun :).  In the course of its travels it has not become excessively loose or wobbly in the stock fitting. I have been to the range with this weapon and put 80 or so rounds through it.  It is very reliable and accurate and is still a deadly battle worthy weapon.  The feeding, firing and ejection is flawless and the accuracy is pretty good.  The sights will hold their settings and are not so loose as to change under recoil.  You have good rifling and I am able to put all 8 rounds on a human torso at 200 yards with it (my poor local range only has 200 yds :( ) For those who have never handled an M1 before, it is important to note that you can't be afraid of M1 Thumb and be able to load properly.  I have handled a couple of these and they all have the ability to sense fear in the operator and wont chamber properly if you are timid in loading the clip.  You have to shove it in hard and get your hand out of the way otherwise the spring can't fly fast enough to over come the resistance if you load slow and then you will have to slap the charging handle to chamber it. It is not a defect of the rifle that it does this.  The bolt needs that small bit of space to build enough velocity to dislodge the cartridge from the clip and chamber it.  Loading the weapon in a timid fashion will rob the bolt of that proper spacing and cause a failure to feed.  You will notice at the range that it will feed and fire as fast as you can pull the trigger, so it is a learned drill to load one of these properly.  I have practiced speed loading at the range and when you have no fear of getting bit by the rifle it will respect you and do what you want.
