External caliber designation is still visible, “7 m m – S M” forward of the second barrel band. This Remington Rolling Block Rifle in 7x57 Mauser Caliber bears patent dates ranging from May 1864 through March 1874. It was a South American military contract rifle manufactured some time in the 1870s. It has no serial number, never had one. The barrel is 30 inches long, and the ramrod appears to be a correct replacement. Its bore is Good to Very Good. Rifling is strong with light pitting. The stock has been refinished with some putty repair toward the buttplate. There are 8 or 10 small repair or fill areas in the musket forend area and top wood piece, none more than 3/8 inch across. Bright streaked armory reblue covers some 30 to 40 percent of the exposed barrel surface area, and about 90 percent of the receiver. The middle barrel band is gray patina, fits reasonably well, and may be a replacement. Forward barrel band with swivel attached appears original or period, as does the rear swivel. Screws on left side of the receiver show only moderate stress and are likely original. Sight screws show moderate stress and may be replacement, but are correct. The rear tang screw shows evidence of beveling to its slot, but appears original also. Left side of receiver has some light old pitting visible under the reblue, and front edge area of receiver underneath shows more extensive pitting that covers less area. Action is very strong, crisp, and well fitted.
This is one of the oldest Remingtons many of us will ever see or own. Any attempt to shoot it should involve consultation with a competent gunsmith or armorer, and should be only with very low velocity ammunition, since this rifle was designed during the Black Powder era. Don't let your buddies use your account. Registered user must be the buyer, with his or her own money. Buying firearms and related items for other people can result in felony charges. Don't try, either, to circumvent any law; for example, a California civilian may not buy a high capacity magazine and have it shipped to his brother-in-law in Nevada. That is a felony.
