About 25 miles from our little town of Henderson is the even smaller town of Toone, Tennessee. While the principal employer in our city is Freed-Hardeman University, the main employer in Toone is Kilgore Corporation, defense contractor plant and producer of Ordnance – lately mostly flares and phosphorous material. We are always nervous when we hear any low-pitched booms coming from the west of us, because many of our friends and customers work at Kilgore.
This rifle, an M-1D configured Garand, was one of Kilgore’s test rifles for many years, until the late 1970s. It is, then, a veteran of both Korea and Vietnam in a real sense, even though its service was in our homeland. We acquired it in the mid-1980s. Barrel side markings are S-A-4-52, which, we assumes, places at least the barrel’s manufacture date as early Korean War. Serial number, the best we can make it out, is 24792xx. The receiver has been buffed and reblued more than once, so its surface lettering is very weak. This situation arose from the heavy phosphoric exposure to the receiver. The barrel and bore, however, are happily at least Very Good if not Excellent. Buttstock assembly matches its rear barrel cover mate well, but is mismatched as to color form the forward forend area or gas tube cover wood. Main buttstock is a very nice walnut, perhaps replacement or plain oil refinish, and it bears no cartouches that we can see. The operating handle has a nice military finish that contrasts with the receiver’s refinish. Springfield Armory numbers on the operating rod are D35382 6 SA, and thanks to our gunsmith colleague who inquired.
Regardless of how anyone interprets this particular rifle’s history, it is quite rare by virtue of its M-1D scope mount configuration. We’re offering it for only $979.95
