This Model 28-2 Highway Patrolman .357, of course, was never manufactured in Nickel as a regular production matter so far as we know. But the lettering is sufficiently sharp and clear that we believe this one was likely one that someone sent to 2100 Roosevelt Avenue back when the personnel at that address would re-nickel for a modest fee. We know. We sent a good many hand ejectors to Springfield back then. The only conspicuous detraction to this unusual old 28-2 is some moderate scratching to the sideplate and a bit of weakness to the nickel near the trigger. Sideplate fit is not wrinkled like many of these were; in fact, it has a slight amount of gap to the fit at its top juncture area with the frame. Screws are unstressed throughout. There is a very slight amount of peeling beginning around the front top edge of the front sight. With some cylinder marking, there are some occasional light surface scratches, yet we insist this distinctive old revolver is at least 90 percent. We have included sufficient photography, we believe, to allow interested parties to determine the extent of their agreement. Grips are period, and also around 90 percent by our estimate.
We consider this 28-2 to be Excellent Mechanically. Lateral wobble to the cylinder is only moderate, both with the trigger pulled and with it relaxed. Bore and cylinder chambers are excellent, bright and clean, as the photos show. Blast effect to the underside of the frame topstrap directly above the forcing cone amounts to a moderately shallow groove that traverses about 90 percent of the topstrap width. Cylinder face to forcing cone gap is very tight, .005 measured from the right side. Double action pull is smooth and consistent, and the hammer breaks as soon as the cylinder times on double action. On single action, the hammer travels about 10 degrees after the cylinder times into place, and the single action trigger pull is a crisp 3 ¼ pounds. Box imitates the more expensive ones of this Highway Patrolman’s N-frame peers of its period, but the box is only a satin-lined hardshell synthetic. Nevertheless, it accentuates the revolver.
