REDUCED;This is a S&W M&P made in 1940 for a British Commonwealth nation. It is the same as a Model 10 BUT chambered for the British service cartrige, much the same as the .38 S&W (not Special). The S/N is 917XXX, no SV. All S/Ns match as well as a number of other marking i.e. CT and an arrowhead as well as a four digit rack number that leads me to think it may be Canadian. Guns made at this time were Blued so it was reblued over pits and scratchs after WWII but the Magna grips are original and correct. This was a lend/lease gun as "United States Property" is stamped on the left topstrap as confirmed by Roy Jinks S&W factory historian.
