This is a 1900 vintage carbine in 44 wcf (44-40) and is overall very good plus condition. The bore I rate a strong 7+ on a 1 to 10 scale, rifling is strong and sharp, there is scattered lite pitting in the grooves but nothing I would have any concerns about, this will be a fine shooter (test target attached). Sights are correct Winchester including the #44A Carbine "ladder" style rear sight. The barrel lettering is sharp and clear as is the tang lettering (see photos). There are traces of the original blue finish remaining in protected areas, mostly it's a nice even silver/gray patina. The metal surfaces are smooth and consistent, there is no pitting present. The receiver is mechanically excellent and tight, feeds, chambers and ejects smoothly, lever operation is easy, crisp and locks up tight, I detect no signs of wear. The screw head slots are sharp, not buggered up as usually seen. The walnut buttstock and forend are tight and solid, wood to metal fit is excellent. The wood appears to have been cleaned sometime in the past but was done properly. There are no cracks, chips or extra holes.
The following is a copy of the information I received from the Cody Firearms Museum. A letter of authenticity for this carbine is available from the Cody Museum if desired.

Overall this is an exceptionally clean 1873 carbine, one of the best I've had in a long time. I don't believe it ever saw much use and certainly was well cared for. It is solid and tight, it does not have the usual looseness and rattles I normally find in these old 73s. If you are looking for a good solid shooter you'll look a long time to find one better.
The test target was shot at 30 yards using the equivalent of cowboy action loads, 200 gr Lyman cast bullet an 6.5 grs of IMR Trail Boss powder. The bore slugs out at a very consistent .429" diameter end to end.
