This new Taurus reminds us more of the Walther PPS more than any other pistol, and the Walther is probably the unintentional progenitor of this Taurus. A combination of two things set this Taurus apart: its 0.95 inch thinness and its lever safety. No one else offers that combination to our knowledge. Manufacturer is Forjas Taurus, S.A., of Porto Alegre, Brazil. Importer and warrantor is Taurus International of Miami. Type is striker fired sub compact polymer frame semi automatic full time double action pistol. The slide need not cycle for the trigger sear to reset itself. Construction is steel barrel, slide, levers, internal parts, and magazine body fitted into a steel reinforced polymer frame. Barrel is 3 3/16 inch stainless, 6 groove 1:9.84 right hand rifling. Guide rod is two piece steel detonics type with flat coiled springs. Slide has rear lateral serrations, measures .955 wide at the port, right hand ejection with loaded chamber indicator at the top center mating surfaces with the chamber hood. Sights are polymer white dot stake on front, with dovetailed two dot low profile combat type windage and elevation adjustable rear. Trigger is .350 smooth faced polymer, with center safety lever; pulls at a steady 6 1/2 pounds, with 3/4 inch of travel. Lever safety is left side mounted low profile, for right handed shooters. The PT709 is equipped with a firing pin safety, but no magazine safety. Taurus internal lock engages on the right slide side, beneath the rear sight. Grip frame has lateral serrations, with vertical cross cuts on their ribs. Magazine is steel bodied factoy blue steel, holds 7 rounds of 9mm Luger ammunition, so 7 + 1 fully loaded capacity. Each 709 comes with a total of One Magazine, no extra magazine included. Overall length is 6 3/8 inches, with 4 1/2 inch height from the top of the rear sight to the magazine floor plate. Weight empty is 18 3/4 ounces, with center of gravity under the back of the trigger. Finish is matte blue steel slide and black polymer. Each PT709 comes in its factory box with protective papers, chamber protector, two keys for its internal lock, instruction manual, and factory registration card for the Taurus Lifetime Warranty.
