Description: This Model 1899H (serial #198127) appears to have been made about 1915 but possibly not shipped till 1918, depending upon which source one uses. This model was only made from 1909 to 1915, and the .22 H.P. only from 1913. As mentioned, it’s in .22 Savage High Power caliber (5.6x52mmR), with a lightweight barrel of 20”. The condition is very good, with the only serious blemish being the missing chip at the toe of the butt stock. This particular Featherweight Model 1899H, we believe, has a factory nickel finish, which, when added to the take-down feature only offered in the .22 H.P. caliber, makes it a very scarce, special order gun.

General information: The Savage Model 1899/99 rifles have quite a history. They were preceded by the Model 1895, which was the first hammerless lever-action rifle produced. A hammerless action was useful as it reduces the lock time, it and allows the rifle to be fired more accurately. It is also less likely to jam in brush or snag on clothing. The rotary magazine uses a spring-loaded spool with grooves to hold the cartridges and has a counter added to the spool to indicate how many rounds are loaded. This design allowed the use of Spitzer bullets which could not be used in the Winchester or Marlin rifles of the time because the pointed tips could cause accidental discharge in tubular magazines. This design gave Savage a lead in producing rifles that could handle high velocity smokeless powder cartridges with bullets offering flatter trajectories than other lever-action designs. The .22 Savage High Power cartridge was developed in 1912 based on a necked-down .25-35 Win. Cartridge, so its 3100 fps. velocity with a .227-.228", 70 grain bullets gave it instant popularity.
