Beautifully engraved and walnut cased Colt SAA 2ND Generation in .357 Magnum with 3 ½ inch barrel and finely checkered and scalloped walnut grips with silver Colt medallions. This is a truly special Colt SAA. The engraving is attributed to the Master engraver Horacio Q. Acevedo, 1924 to 2010, who, in his adult life, practiced his exceptional craftsmanship in Kankakee, Illinois . In 1959, he was hired by a local business owner, Tom Haas, of Guns Unlimited. Mr. Acevedo moved his wife and children to Kankakee and assumed the role of chief gunsmith and engraver for Guns Unlimited. He eventually began working as an independent contractor for a number of collectors and dealers, and performed his craft for the Colt Firearms Manufacturing Company through special commission projects. His elaborately hand-engraved firearms are owned by a multitude of private, national and international collectors. Mr. Acevedo’s work has been featured in “The Book of Colt Engraving” and “The Rampant Colt”, both by R. L. Wilson, the “American Engravers” by Bleile & Beinfeld and “Colt Legends” by Adler. Before he died in 2010, Mr. Acevedo established a family owned and operated business, now known as Acevedo Restoration and Engraving, Inc.
This wonderful Colt SAA combines classic Colt engraving with brightly nickeled metal, nitre blued screws, trigger and ejector rod head, and beautiful walnut grips to yield an heirloom quality Colt revolver.
This Colt SAA is accompanied by a hand fitted walnut presentation case (12” X 8 1/8” X 2 7/8”) with three blue fabric interior compartments (one for the pistol, one for ammunition and one for accessories), a red satin sash ribbon (3 ¼” X 7”) with gold COLT logo accenting the interior of the case top, and a 1” diameter blue and gold enameled Colt Heritage medallion that is inscribed “A Heritage of Colt Craftsmanship”. In the case is a vintage empty box for WESTERN SUPER X .357 MAGNUM / METAL PIERCING / 158 GRAIN METAL POINT / LUBALOY CONICAL BULLET, a blued steel cleaning rod with turned walnut knob, and the key to the case lock.
Metal stampings for this Colt include: Barrel, top, 2 lines = “COLT’S PT. F. A. MFG. Co / HARTFORD, CT. U.S.A.”; Barrel, left side = engraved “357 MAGNUM”; Frame, left side, 2 lines = “PAT.SEPT. 19, 1871. / JULY 2, 72. JAN 19,75” followed by the Colt Rampant Colt Logo in a circle; Loading Gate = assembly number “174”; Trigger Guard Stamping, left side = inverted triangle with “P” in the front and a single “P” in the rear; Trigger Guard Stamping, right side = “P” in the front; Rear of Cylinder = Rampant Colt Logo; Front of Cylinder = “M” “4” “4” “6” on four cylinder spokes; Grip Frame, left side front = “30446SA”; Grip Frame, left side rear = “30446SA” and “C”.
This Colt SAA is new and pristine as engraved and embellished. The walnut case shows minor wear on the outer surfaces but evidences almost no wear for the interior surfaces and embellishments.
If you are drawn to fine examples of Master gunsmithing and engraving, and if Colt SAAs call your name whenever they are near you, then this Colt may belong in your collection. It is certainly a showpiece and displays well.
NOTE: Color variations in the photos are the result of variations in the use of ambient versus flash lighting. The nickel is truly silver in coloring, not golden and the walnut stocks are a rich walnut shade. The nitre blued screws, trigger and ejector rod head are vibrant.
