Here we have an amazing find…a Cody Firearms Museum documented 1873 rifle with 5 special-ordered features and in remarkable condition. This Winchester Model 1873, sn173888 shipped in 1885, is photo documented to have all factory original parts, with photos of serial numbers, assembly numbers, including the cutout for the top tang showing the assembly number of the stock, tang, and buttplate. The photos of the lower tang will show the assembly numbers and the 3 “XXX” marks denoting the special-order deluxe wood. There is no shortage of Winchester Model 1873 rifles for sale on the internet and at the collector gun shows, as they made over 720,000 Model 1873 guns. Most are standard rifles often restored or with mis-matched parts. It is well known that many unscrupulous sellers will fake features of Deluxe rifles. Here we demonstrate this rifle to be all original and correct with photographs to prove it. The Cody letter will show the 28” full octagon barrel (one of only 600 rifles with extra order longer than 24” barrel), set trigger that still functions properly, Checkered pistol grip stock, plate on end of pistol grip, and casehardened receiver. Even the sights are original and correct. In George Madis’ book on the Winchester Model 1873 he details out special ordered features in an attempt to demonstrate just how rare special-order guns can be. He states the following statistics on special order features for 1873 rifles as 600 with longer than 24” barrels, 600 with upgraded wood, 380 with pistol grip stocks, 700 with checkered stocks, and only 26 rifles with set triggers. The .32-20 rifle was the most accurate cartridge that had been paired with the 1873 rifle, and they made 109,558 in that caliber. The best investment Winchesters have a few things in common; rarity, desirable features, and originality. This beautiful rifle hits a home run on all areas. It will be a long time before you find another special-order Deluxe 1873 with a 28” heavy octagon barrel and infallible documentation. We have disassembled and Ultrasonic cleaned this rifle, inspected all parts for viability and function, properly lubricated all parts, took some photographs, and reassembled for your use or display.
