HG8278Here is what Walther said about their flagship concealed carry innovation when they introduced it at the 2008 SHOT Show: Walther PPS is short recoil operated, locked breech pistol that uses modified Browning type locking with tilting barrel. Frame of the gun is made from impact resistant polymer. Trigger is of double action only type, striker fired, with pre-cocked striker system, similar to QA system used in Walther P99 pistols. This system requires a manual recocking by partial slide retraction in the case of misfire. Gun is fitted with automated trigger safety and firing pin block; additional storage type safety is provided by removable backstrap of the grip; once backstrap is removed, the firing pin is automatically decocked and gun is blocked until the backstrap is reinstalled. This patented system is called QuickSafe by Walther. Sights are low profile MP3 Meprolight Night Sights, with rear sight adjustable for windage. It even has a spare front night sight in the package, and from our dark room inspection, luminosity is at least 80 percent strength. This While we compliment whoever wrote the factory blurb, and whoever translated it into English, what is attractive about this pistol is the short emphasis it received in the American Rifleman, something our dial caliper tells us: .895 frame and slide thickness. No one else can touch it for thinness. It's no slouch for other dimensions, either. Maximum overall length is 6 1/4 inches; and height measurement from the top of the slide to the magazine floorplate is only 4 1/8 inches. Caliber is .40 Smith & Wesson. Capacity is 6 + 1, the pistol comes with both its original flat plate 5 shot and finger rest 6 shot magazines; double action only; black synthetic grip frame and black matte steel slide and parts; weight is only 19.4 ounces empty. Barrel is 3.2 inches long. Product code is WAP10001; note, however, that the original box has been overlabeled to W6P100001, Smith & Wesson Demo Status. It is in its original box with all its papers, including a never executed factory registration certificate, and its fired brass envelope dated from 2008. This specimen, then, is a first year production piece. It has German proof marks on the slide and barrel. Furthermore, this PPS was never out of Smith & Wesson corporate custody until we got it. Surface detractions are minimal, only two small white streaks on the forward left side of the slide, as the photos will show. We rate it as Excellent, perhaps even Near Mint in Box, but photos ought to suffice for our shoppers to judge finish grade for themselves. This pistol will definitely be one of the last Walthers with Smith & Wesson markings. Replacement price on this thinnest .40 of all in our area is upwards of $900.00, if a person can even find one. We're offering this one, however, for only $ 569.00. Don't try, either, to circumvent any law; for example, a California civilian may not buy a high capacity magazine and have it shipped to his brother-in-law in Nevada. That is a felony.
