Lefever A Grade Skeet 12ga. LOTS OF CONDITION, ALL THE OPTIONS
The Ithaca Gun Co. produced the “Lefever Nitro” using the well known name of Dan Lefever to call attention to their affordable but well made double shotguns. They utilized this marketing to produce a group of Lefevers with nicer fit and finish and with a variety of configurations which they labeled the Lefever A Grades, with nicer wood, checkering, some line engraving, and they looked nearly identical to their more costly Ithaca NID era guns. Ithaca actually produced 6 different configurations in the A Grades from a field style, to a single barrel trap, to the very low production Model 6 Skeet gun. This gun is one of these Model 6 “Special Skeet Guns” with single trigger, beavertail forend, ejectors, double ivory beads, and the skeet chokes of the day. Serial number 300606, it was made in 1936, the first year of production. The Model 6 was discontinued in 1939 with a very small number made, likely less than 1000 guns in all gauges. The Lefever A Grade Skeet is an excellent skeet gun even today, and this one is in very nice original condition.
The 26” barrels retain 96% factory blue, mirror bores, chokes SK1/SK2 (.009/.013, can be altered to your specs for $70 per barrel), bore diameter of .728 both barrels, minimum barrel wall thickness 38 thou right, 32 thou left, 2 ¾” chambers, ribs tight and barrels ring like church bells, double ivory beads, ejectors well timed, barrels tight on breech face and hinge pin like a new gun, all in good order. I have shot skeet with this gun many times and it really breaks the targets evenly, clean, and with authority.
The action retains 70% factory case color, excellent screws, action tight with lever right of center, clear engraving, single trigger with nice pulls, 95% trigger guard blue, mechanically excellent in all ways.
The wood had all original factory finish with a few scratches, especially a big one on the right side. We are in the process of touching up the scratches without fully refinishing the stock. Checkering is strong and original, LOP 14 7/8” to the Ithaca butt pad, 13 ¾” LOP to the end of the wood (wood not cut, and measurements are from a rear trigger position meaning this is a LOOOONG stock for an American double), 2 3/8” drop at heel, 1 ½” drop at comb for excellent dimensions (can be bent or altered to your needs for a small additional cost), no major dents or cracks, excellent wood to metal fit.
The Ithaca Lefever A Grade Skeet Special is an affordable vintage American double set up for skeet shooting or any upland or clay target game that more open chokes would be your choice. The skeet chokes of yesteryear were actually closer to IC/LM so it is an excellent field or sporting clays gun. These guns are well respected and sought after by those in the know and make for a good investment quality gun at an affordable price.
