We are offering for sale a Civil War Era SMITH CARBINE single shot rifle chambered in 50 cal. This is a LOW SERIAL rifle in fair to good condition.
21 ½” barrel is in fair to good condition. Original finish has greyed with age and oxidation affects a good amount of the surface. Bore is surprisingly clean with some light pitting towards breach end. Original rear flip sight intact. Receiver looks similar to barrel with light to moderate oxidation in spots. Left side marked “Poultney & Trimble Baltimore U.S.A.” and “Smith’s Patent June 23, 1857”. Hammer cocks back and holds tightly; Snaps forward with great force. Rifle breaks open at breach by use of “plunger” located ahead of trigger. The “plunger” does not fully work and the barrel needs a bit of help to break open from the receiver. Furniture is the best feature of this gun in my opinion. Original stock and fore-end are beautiful and completely free of any damage; No breaks or cracks. Beautiful patina!!!! Tigger guard rear screw is partially broken inside the wood.
This is a very scarce LOW SERIAL NUMBER Smith Carbine. It would make a great candidate for a restoration project or could be added to the collection as it sits
