This listing is for the exact rifle in the photos. Here is a rifle that switched sides in World War II. Yugoslav partisans captured the retreating Nazi Army’s 98K rifles. Barrel is importer stamped on its right side. Most of the German markings were obliterated, with Radionica stamped on the left side receiver and the Yugoslavian crest on the breech ring. Arsenal was number 145, Radionica, or Padionica, or PA??O?IIA PAUNOHlNILA, whatever one credibly makes of the Cyrillic stamp. Mod. 98 on receiver’s left side, Waffenamts on the lower band, on the extractor, under the front sight, and on the bolt release lever; Numbers on the lower band, on the sights, and on the release lever; and likely internal markings are German. The balance are Yugoslav, including the serial numbers and the /48 suffix. Receiver and cartouches have a matching Yugo number, but the bolt handle and floorplate have different numbers that do not match each other. All the German numbers are mismatched. Original Manufacturer was Nazi Germany’s Military Complex, principally Mauser-Werke. Reworking facility was Factory 145 in the early 1950s, attest the markings we have listed above and the photos. Type is 98K Bolt Action Mauser Rifle. Chambering is 7.92 x 57, 8mm Mauser caliber. Construction is entirely steel metal, with original issue walnut stock and barrel guard. Note the sling slot filler splice behind the pistol grip. Barrel is 24 inch, 4 groove 1:9 right hand. Sights are welded band front with steel blade insert, and calibrated 2000 meter military rear. Bayonet lug is grooved and threaded for a 12 inch x .200 rod that is not included. Magazine is internal box 5 round with removable, not detachable, floor plate. Safety is 3 position cowl mounted. Trigger is .262 smooth face, pulls two stage at 6 pound vicinity with minimal felt creep. Buttstock length of pull is 13 3/4 inches, with a 3/4 inch right hand cast. Weight empty is 8 pounds 10 ounces with center of gravity at the breech face; with 43 5/8 overall length. Finish is arsenal reblue, with clear lettering. Surface detractions are only moderate, principally stock scouring, upper edge wear, and gray floor plate. We rate this rifle as Very Good / Refinish condition, close to Excellent, but photos ought to suffice for our distinguished shoppers to judge finish grade for themselves. Bore, chamber, and mechanism are all bright and clear. We have not completely disassembled for full degreasing. Inside receiver and cartridge follower show very little use. From its condition, we estimate this rifle was fired fewer than 500 times. Replacement pricing on German Mausers often approaches the $1,000 mark.
