Fox CE 12ga. NICE ONE, 7 1/4LBS., EJECTORS
The A.H. Fox C Grade is adorned with nicely figured wood, finely checkered including the side panels at the head of the stock, and some of the nicest scroll and game scene engraving observed on any vintage American double. It is a classy and elegant double gun. This gun, sn 30028, is a Philly Fox built in 1924 and like most all Fox guns, it is a delight in hand, balanced ¼” in front of the hinge pin and weighing in at a svelte 7 1/4lbs. The recently deceased author and noted double gun expert Michael McIntosh brought the Fox gun to the forefront of the collector/shooter’s world with the book “A.H. Fox, ‘The Finest Gun in the World’”. McIntosh seemed to agree with Ansley H. Fox that the action on the Fox shotgun was likely the best box lock action on the planet in its simplicity, diminutive size, and perfect proportions. Fox shotguns are highly sought after and have appreciated in value significantly in the past several years. This is a wonderful, honest Fox for your 12ga. hunting and clay target needs and will be a wise investment that will earn you money while you enjoy its use.
The #2 weight 28” Chromox Fluid Steel barrels have excellent bores and were recently rust blued to perfection, with clear sharp lettering and engraving, excellent bores choked M/F (.020/.040, can be altered to your desired restriction for $60 per barrel), 2 5/8” chambers (chambers and cones can be lengthened for $140 to reduce recoil and possibly improve patterns, but not required to shoot 2 ¾” shells. If you don’t know why, ask), minimum barrel wall thickness of 32 thousandths, no pits, dents or scratches, ribs are tight and barrels ring true, barrels tight on breech face, ejectors strong and timed, a great set of barrels.
The receiver retains 50% factory case colors, sharp, clear engraving, excellent screws, double triggers that are crisp, trigger guard shows 80% nitre blue, action tight with lever well right of center, mechanically excellent throughout.
The nicely figured stock has the very desirable ½ round pistol grip, excellent checkering, no cracks or repairs anywhere, great shootable dimensions with a LOP of 14 ½ to the end of the NOSHOC pad (comes with the original butt plate that puts LOP at 13 7/8”, existing pad can be ground down to shorten LOP at no charge), 2 5/8” drop at heel, 1 5/8” drop at comb (can be bent to your specs for about $150), superb wood to metal fit, a great set of wood.
This is a great CE Fox that is light enough to carry across hill and dale, but with enough weight to tame recoil when shooting heavier loads or sporting clays. It feels like a gun that weighs less than 7lbs. and it really comes up nice. A proper oil finish would really make this gun pop (can be done for $300). It is ready to serve its new owner for decades to come, and the value is sure to go up making it a sound investment quality firearm.
