Offered is this vintage 1892 Winchester in 38-40 WCF. It was made in 1893, the first full year of production for the 1892. This is a very early rifle with 5 digit serial number 24,XXX. It has a 24 inch octagon barrel and the bore is in amazingly good condition for a rifle that's 119 years old. The rifling is still sharp with good shine, I rate the bore 8.5 on a 1 to 10 scale. There is scattered light pitting but it is very minor in my opinion and will shoot fine with cast or jacketed bullets. I have test fired this rifle and it turned in a 1 1/4" 4 shot group at 40 yards and the headspace is perfect. The sights are correct Winchester #21 front sight with German silver blade insert and the rear is the Winchester #22H with #1A thumb style elevator. The barrel and magazine exhibit wear consistent with an antique rifle of this age, there are traces of original blue in protected areas but mostly is an even plum gray patina. The receiver is mechanically excellent and has that very desirable "smooth as glass" operation when you cycle the bolt. This smooth operation was a hallmark of Winchester's early rifles when they spent the time to hand finish the internal working parts - nice! It feeds, chambers and ejects smoothly and properly. There is little original blue remaining, mostly a nice plum gray patina. The screw slots are still sharp and not buggered up. The wood is tight and solid on both the forend and buttstock. The wood does have over a century of use and has a few handling dents. The worse is on the right side of the forend although they are not as bad as they appear in the photos. My Nikon seems to magnify the dents and make them look much deeper than they actually are. Overall this Winchester is all original and correct and in excellent operating condition. This is a pre 1899 antique and doesn't require an FFL for shipping.
