Here is one of the last U.S. Made side by sides, the Stevens 511 Series A double barrel, a mildly economized variant of the Savage Stevens 311 whose production ended in 1989. From this one’s D005000 range serial number, we estimate that it was manufactured in 1983 or 1984. It comes to us from its original and exclusive retail owner in Kansas. Chambering is for 20 gauge shells, 2 3/4 inch or 3 inch interchangeably; dark stained hardwood press-checkered buttstock and forend; color casehardened receiver and matte blue 28 inch barrels, .608 muzzle Modified right tube and .602 muzzle Full Choke left barrel. Double trigger makes life simple for the operator; tang safety lever is anodized aluminum, and barrels are blued steel. Trigger guard is blued steel as well. Length of pull is 14 1/4 inches from the face of the forward / right tube trigger to the end of the factory original buttplate. Weight empty is a well balanced 6 pounds 9 ounces, with the center of gravity under the back quarter of the forend. The photos show the difference between this 511-A and the better known 311-A; this 511-A lacks the raised serrated rib that its pricier sibling had. Surface detractions are minimal, only a series of scours down the lower left edge of the forend and on the comb of the buttstock. We rate this Savage 20 gauge as Excellent, since no more than 10 percent of its surfaces are affected by our estimate. Photos, at any rate, ought to suffice for our distinguished shoppers to judge finish grade for themselves. It is certainly excellent mechanically; bore, chamber, and mechanism are all bright, clean, and excellent, and from our knowledge of its owner, it has been fired no more than 100 rounds or so.
