26" TWIST BARRELS ARE LIGHTLY PITTED. BARREL WALLS ARE UNUSUALLY HEAVY, WHICH MAKES THIS SHORT BARRELED GUN WEIGH IN AT 8 POUNDS. EARLY STYLE BACK ACTION LOCK PLATES ARE STAMPED WM. MORGAN & BR.... OVERALL FINE SHOOTING CONDITION... WHAT MAKES THIS GUN PARTICULARLY INTERESTING IS ITS POSSIBLE ASSOCIATION WITH THE CONFEDERACY. ACCORDING TO GARDNER WILLIAM MORGAN WAS A GUNSMITH LOCATED IN NEW YORK CITY AROUND 1850. THERE WAS ALSO A GUNSMITH NAMED WILLIAM MORGAN LOCATED IN RICHMOND AND PETERSBURG, VIRGINIA DURING AND AFTER THE CIVIL WAR. WAS THIS GUN MADE IN NEW YORK OR VIRGINA? MY GUESS IS VIRGINIA. AND HERES WHY: WITH ORIGINAL LENGTH 26" HEAVY WALLED BARRELS, THIS GUN WAS MADE TO SHOOT HEAVY LOADS. THIS IS NOT A LIGHT HUNTING GUN, BUT IT IS A HEAVY MAN KILLER. AND NOTICE THE STAR MOTIFF AND ID PLATE INLAYS IN THE STOCK. NOT WHAT ONE TYPICALLY SEES IN A HUNTING GUN. THE STAR MOTIFF WAS POPULAR IN THE SOUTH BEFORE AND DURING THE WAR. ALSO, NOTE THE LEFT SIDE OF THE STOCK HAS INLETTING THAT HAS BEEN FILLED IN WITH WOOD. THIS STOCK WAS ORIGNALLY MADE FOR A LEFT HANDED SHOOTER. THIS IS THE KIND OF STOCK ONE OFTEN SEES ON CONFEDERATE GUNS MADE UP UNDER EMERGENCY CONDITIONS, USING WHATEVER PARTS WERE AVAILABLE. PLUS, TAKE A LOOK AT THE BREECH REINFORCING AT THE TOP OF THE BARRELS. FURTHER EVIDENCE THAT THIS GUN WAS MADE FOR MILITARY PURPOSES? ANY INPUT RE OTHER WM. MORGAN MADE GUNS WOULD BE APPRECIATED.
