Description: Recent closet find offered as it was found. 1861 Tower Musket (Enfield Model 1853) as sold to the Union Army during the Civil War. This rifle is marked behind the trigger guard: 72.F.110.N.Y.V. This says it is from the New York State Volunteers, 110th Infantry Regiment, Company F, rifle No.72. The 110th Regiment was formed early in the war from the Oswego NY area, F Company was mainly raised from men from Hannibal, New York. The 110th fought in battles in the deep South with Sherman and other Union Generals. The brief history of the Regiment and this rifle is:------------------- Ordered to New Orleans in 1862, and early in 1863 was assigned to Emory's division of the 19th corps. Its first experience under fire was at Fort Bisland, and at Franklin it had 12 killed and wounded. It took part in the long siege of Port Hudson and shared in the grand assault of June 14. The total loss of the regiment during the siege was 37 killed, wounded and missing. Its last battle was at Vermillion bayou, La., in Nov. 1863, where it lost 6 killed and wounded. In Feb., 1864, it was ordered to Fort Jefferson, Fla which it occupied until the end of the war. If you copy and paste this address below it will show you more pictures and the history: ------------------------------------Now about the this rifle. It is very, very hard to find a unit marked rifle like this! An original marking like this is the only sure way to prove a rifle actually served in the Civil War and fought in a combat regiment! This rifle was brought into a local gun shop as you see it. There was no family or other history on it. It definitely needs more research! It could even be linked to an individual Union soldier. The rifle is 55" long over all with a 39" barrel. It appears to be smooth bore at about .650 caliber. There is no rear sight, front sight is original. The wood from in front of the middle band is missing, it is cut at an angle right there. The butt stock has been carved down on the comb to form a very comfortable cheek rest. The ramrod is still in place. The hammer and lock function fine. The barrel has the early Union 24 and 24 marking on the barrel. There are even Crown proofs which document the Union Army Purchase contract, these are still visible behind the trigger guard! Let the pictures show you the condition. This rifle will clean up nicely if you like and the missing forearm wood could be replaced if desired. A magazine article was written about this unit, the 110th New York, in 2003. That author has a similarly marked gun (see pictures), and other marked guns from the 110th are also know in collections. A Civil War Musket with known and proven Unit Markings and from a Union combat regiment is very, very hard to find! No FFL needed. I can send this rifle straight to you in most states.
