Here is one of the immediate ancestors to Mossberg’s 590 series of Military & Police Shotguns. This is a 500-A Mossberg with black polymer 14 inch buttstock and traditional serrated Corncob type composite forends. Its barrel, magazine tube, slide arms, bolt, and shell carrier – all its steel parts – are military parkerized finish; and the lightweight alloy receiver is black matte anodized. Trigger group and safety lever are polymer, and the safety is the traditional Mossberg top tang safety that is southpaw-friendly. This 500 A has been on duty protecting one of our much-maligned banking institutions, and it has been hauled around and stored more than it has been fired. Surface scouring is extensive, but no pitting or gouging anywhere. We rate it as Good, perhaps Very Good, finishwise, since around 30 to 35 percent of its finish is affected by our estimate. Photos, at any rate, ought to suffice for prospective owners to judge finish grade for themselves. This 500A is Excellent mechanically. Bore, chamber, and mechanism are all bright, clean, and excellent; and from the operation streaking to the slide arms and magazine tube, or better lack of much steaking, we estimate it has been fired fewer than 500 rounds, no rounds at all for a Mossberg that will go 100,000 with no problem just like an old Ford. Other specs are: slide action shotgun with side ejection and top tang safety; receiver disconnector lever, smooth faced steel combat trigger; 18 inch cylinder bore barrel with both 2 3/4 inch and 3 inch capability; magazine capacity 5 + 1 on 2 3/4 inch shells or 4 + 1 on 3 inch magnums. Replacement pricing on the currently produced 590 series Mossbergs, this one’s M&P descendants, is in the $600 range in our area.
