Dating Winchester M1 Carbines is enigmatic, because their barrels were usually not stamped. This specimen’s serial number is 5,611,000 range, and that positions it as among the first 100,000 Winchesters produced in the W.R.A. First Serial Number bloc. This specimen comes to us from the estate of a distinguished U.S. Marine Veteran in Wilson County, Tennessee. This was not his service weapon; his heirs informed us that he carried a Garand. Note the early L style twin aperture sights and the push button safety; both those features are consistent with this being an Early War Winchester. Stamping is minimal, only the letter G on the under side of the receiver; the numeral 6 on the bottom of the trigger guard, and EW on the right side of the trigger housing on on the left side of the safety button. Surface detractions are moderate. This specimen probably issued with a Du-Lite finish, and may have undergone on repark. Lettering is sharp throughout. Surface detractions are moderate to extensive. Barrel shows an external lightly pitted area 6 inches back of the muzzle, with some dark etchy toning on the handle and on the trigger group housing, as the photos show. Stock is walnut, no visible cartouches, but we believe it is original early War GI, attest its parkerized buttplate and screw. We rate this Carbine as Good, 65 percent vicinity. Photos, at any rate, ought to suffice for our shoppers to judge finish grade for themselves. It is excellent mechanically. Bore, chamber, and mechanism are all bright, clean, and excellent. Out of fewer than 1000 or so carbines we’ve dealt in the past 40 years, fewer than a dozen of them were early war like this one.
