From its original family of ownership in nearby Perry County, Tennessee, comes this very attractive specimen of John M. Browning’s prize field shotgun, the Auto Five Light Twelve. Manufacturer was Fabrique Nationale of Herstal, Belgium; and Importer was Browning Arms of St. Louis and Montreal, and the barrel is so marked. From the receiver’s 71G serial number prefix, this Browning was manufactured in 1971. Type is recoil operated semi automatic shotgun with adjustable / removable friction rings for light load or heavy load shells. Metal construction is entirely steel, with gold plated trigger, blue finish, and white bolt. Buttstock and forend are cut checkered, medium hue European Walnut. Chambering is 12 gauge, 2 3/4 inch shells only, with a 4 shell magazine, 4 + 1 capacity. Barrel is 27 1/2, nominally 28 inch, .250 Wide 14 Post wavy serration Ventilated Rib. Choke marking is **, Modified, and the muzzle mikes at .704. Buttstock measures 14 1/4 inches from the gold plated trigger face to the end of the factory butt plate. Weight empty is 7 pounds 13 ounces with center of gravity at the operating handle. Surface detractions are moderate, principally lateral contact scouring on the buttstock, with finish loss on the heel area. Metal wear is chiefly palm carry contact on the under side of the receiver and lower tang. Barrel shows one small white forend contact operation mark forward of the forend. Trigger plating shows only faint freckling. We rate this Browning as Very Good, 80 percent vicinity by our estimate, but photos ought to suffice for our distinguished shoppers to judge finish grade for themselves. Bore, chamber, and mechanism are all bright and clean. From this shotgun’s condition and from our knowledge of its family of ownership, we estimate it has been fired no more than 500 or 600 times at Perry County Squirrels and Rabbits. Replacement pricing on Belgium Brownings like this one often run well into the 4 figures. We’re offering this Light Twelve, however, for only $ 689.00.
