Here is a gun born at Colt, shipped to Arkansas, and then sought fame and fortune in Hollywood! Unlike most starlets, this one has survived, even though it had a face lift. The Colt was originally shipped to Speer Hardware Company, Ft. Smith, Arkansas, on December 28, 1904, with nine other guns. Now, use your imagination! (I'm using mine.) Some U.S. Marshall carried it till the West calmed down and he went to California to be in the movies. He probably needed money and the gun ended up as a prop with Stembridge Gun Rentals, one of the three largest suppliers of firearms to the movie industry. Stembridge was founded by James Stembridge and Cecile B. DeMille, and did business from about 1920 to 1999, when the old company closed its doors. Most of the guns were auctioned off then. Stembridge was then run by Syd Stembridge, a nephew of the founder.
This gun has been nicely restored to its original lettered, condition, probably between 1950 and now, but shows some overall frosting, and blue wear on the left side of the barrel The barrel markings are faint but the serials are all visible. The Stembridge "S" can also be seen on the left frame above the trigger and on the frame bottom over the serial number. The gun has all its clicks and locks up tight.
The vintage stag grips are not factory and the early 1900's double loop holster is not maker marked.
