It was originally shipped to Simmons Hardware Company, St. Louis, Missouri, on March 8th, 1893 (serial #150271) with 16 other guns. It is in the same configuration as it was when shipped: 4.75” barrel, blue and case, standard grips and in .44-40 caliber (designated “Colt Frontier Six Shooter” on the left side of the barrel). However, the almost perfect finish is the result of a factory re-work probably done prior to 1904. That was when most all guns were marked with a “VP” proof mark on the forward left trigger guard bow. (Reportedly, a number of guns made around 1915 also lacked the triangular VP proof mark.) This Colt has a few storage marks and very slight muzzle wear on the left side, as well as some finished over corrosion on the cylinder face. There is a slight turn line on the cylinder and the bore shows some shallow, black powder frosting. The grips are almost perfect and are probably gutta percha as they have a slight brownish cast to them. (See pictures of the three digit “268” drawer numbers from the re-work.) Made before 1898, this gun is an antique and requires no FFL for shipment. This is an exquisite example of an almost factory new finish on an antique Colt SAA. The Colt comes with a period double loop, hand carved and laced holster. It is quite fine quality and partially lined. There is no maker mark. If you are not aware, when you click on an individual picture, there are forward and back arrows in the upper left corner. If you click the icon between the arrows, you will get a great enlargement. We suggest viewing pictures on a full-size computer to take advantage of this feature.
