Here is the tried and true, accurate, simple and reliable Smith & Wesson .38 Special Military & Police Stainless, numbered Model 64. The 4 inch heavy barrel 64 is by far the most sensible handgun to own, from novice users to seasoned veterans. It is well balanced, delivers adequate energy with minimal felt recoil, and it is remarkably easy to hit with. This specimen of the Model 64, 8th Engineering change, served with the Ohio Department of Corrections. From its CJB Serial number prefix, it was manufactured in 2004. Its barrel is also the two piece style. Type is traditional double and single action revolver with internal transfer bar safety device. This 64 also has the Smith & Wesson internal action lock with two keys. Construction is stainless steel, K Magnum Frame with Round Butt. Trigger is MIM case colored .312 smooth faced combat style, with matching .265 serrated spur service width hammer. Capacity is 6 rounds of .38 Special standard or +P high performance ammunition. Weight empty is 36 ounces, with center of gravity at the trigger. Grips are ODC issue Michaels Finger Groove Combat. Note the OH DC number engraved on the right side plate of the frame. Apart from that, surface detractions on this particular 64 are minimal, principally holster buffing, occasional scouring mostly on the edges, and faint dark toning to the hammer and trigger sides. Yoke screw shows minimal stress from annual armorer servicing. We rate it as Very Good, close to Excellent, 85 percent vicinity by our estimate. Photos, however, should suffice for interested parties to judge finish grade for themselves. This 64-8 is Excellent mechanically. Double action trigger pull is smooth and consistent, and the hammer travels 5 to 10 degrees after the cylinder times on all six positions in double action. On single action, the hammer travels an additional 30 degrees on all six after the cylinder times into place. Single action trigger pull is a crisp original 4 1/2 pounds. Lateral play to the cylinder is negligible with the trigger relaxed; and with its trigger fully depressed, the cylinder does not move at all. Blast effect to the underside of the frame top strap directly above the barrel's forcing cone is negligible, only a faint etchy streak on that surface. This revolver has had very few if any +P rounds fired in it. Cylinder face to forcing cone gap is a perfect .006. This 8 year old service revolver has been well maintained and sparingly used during its career, and it is eminently serviceable for civilian or security use.
