1861 Springfield foraging musket (#59704 US).....one was assigned to each cavalry troop (company) in the mess section for the taking of small game. It is approximately 20 gauge with a 32" barrel; excellent lock; has usual brown patina. Stock wrist has been nicely repaired. I have owned this musket since 1960....was purchased on the Ft Ridgely/Lower Sioux Reservation (near New Ulm, MN). See American Rifleman May 1976 for info on foraging muskets in the US Army.
