Here is the full power Chief’s Special, numbered model 60, fourteenth engineering change. This 60-14 comes to us from its exclusive civilian owner in the Sunshine State. From its fired brass envelope, it left the factory in January of 2006. Type is traditional double action pocket revolver. Manufacturer is Smith & Wesson of Springfield, MA. Construction is entirely steel metal, with rubber combat grips. Chambering is .38 Smith & Wesson Special and .357 Remington Magnum interchangeably. Barrel is 2 1/8 inch full lug one piece five groove right hand 1:18.75 rifling. Sight is pinned in serrated black ramp front, mounted on a solid rib. Rear sight is frame integral fixed notch. Cylinder Capacity is 5 rounds. Frame is J Round Butt, Magnum. Ignition is flat hammer face against floating firing pin. This variant has the internal hammer lock, as the photos show. Trigger is .315 case colored MIM smooth face combat, with matching .265 serrated spur hammer. Thumb latch is current style beveled. Grips are factory issue Michaels Finger Groove Combat. Weight empty is 23 1/2 ounces, with center of gravity at the rear cylinder face. Frame, barrel, and cylinder finish are all stainless, and this specimen has been professionally polished to bright stainless. It is in its original gray hinged flat blue plastic box with two keys for its internal lock, protective nox paper, S&W laser grip brochure, NRA card, instruction manual, and never executed factory registration card. Surface detractions are minimal, only lateral weakness to the trigger finish, and very faint contact buffing to the grips’ butt area. We rate it as Excellent / polished in Box, but photos ought to suffice for our distinguished shoppers to judge finish grade for themselves. Bore, cylinder chambers, and mechanism are all bright and clean. Double action trigger pull is still tight but smooth, and the hammer travels an additional 5 degrees after the cylinder times in all five positions on double action. On single action, the hammer travels fully 35 to 40 degrees after the cylinder times, and the single action trigger pull measures a crisp, original 3 3/8 pounds. Blast effect to the under side of the frame top strap directly above the barrel’s forcing cone is negligible, only a faint etchy streak that traverses the width of the top strap. We estimate revolver has been fired fewer than 50 times since its factory test firing on January 13, 2006. Replacement price on this revolver in our area is upwards of $700.00.
