Howa rifles made their debut under the Smith & Wesson trademark in the 1970s when the Massachusetts Company became overly aggressive with its marketing; the Howa shotguns and rifles, however, survived purely from their excellence and accuracy and for no other reason. They are presently going strong, imported by Legacy Sports in Nevada. Here is one of their non-S&W, Interarms Imported 1500 rifles, the Model 1500 in its original BDL type cut-checkered glossy Walnut stock. Barrel length is 22 inches, with original Williams Sights. Action type, of course, is three-lug bolt action with 4+1 round capacity due to the internal box magazine. Floorplate and trigger group are very attractive semi-gloss anodized alloy. Scope is a Japanese Nichols 3x9 variable, Wide Angle 40mm, predecessor to the Japanese Nikons and period correct, mounted with Weaver steel-top, 8-screw See Thru Scope mounts. This rifle is excellent throughout, and from our knowledge of its exclusive retail owner, an Ohioan-turned-Tennessean, it has been fired fewer than 40 rounds in its entire career. Rifle bore, chamber, and mechanism, and the scope lens coatings and mechanism are all excellent. Owner zeroed at 100 yards with Winchester 130 grain Power Point; we will need, however, to separate the scope from the rifle in order to prevent damage when we ship it. Replacement pricing on this rifle and scope combination is upwards of $1,000 for its current Japanese made variants.
