This is a genuine Winchester Hawk Bill pattern utility knife from the 1940s, in Very Good if not Excellent Condition. True, it was one of the least expensive of the Winchester Knife line, and its cumbersome size explains its survival very, very well preserved. Blade thickness and width is 95 percent or more of original strength. The walnut handle panels still retain some original wood grain visibility despite being heavily saturated with oil. This knife’s chief detraction is mechanical, the blade is wont to strike the reverse steel liner upon closing, and the backspring has excellent strength and will propel the blade within 30 to 35 degrees proximity to closed position. Blade surfaces have light smooth toning, about 25 percent darkness among very nice light gun metal gray. Backspring toning is similar, with more like 40 percent darkness as the photos show. We detect no actual pitting anywhere on the surfaces, even the iron bolsters. This old Winchester might have been lowly among the product line, but it is a very nice knife, fairly scarce pattern, too. Pattern number is 1616, stamped on reverse of the blade tang, as our photographer has tried to show. We’re offering it for only $ 159.00
