Description: This listing is for the exact revolver in the photos. From duty with the Service de Police de Montréal, Montreal Police Department in English, comes this serviceable and historic Service Revolver. Manufacturer was Smith & Wesson of Springfield, MA, under Bangor Punta corporate ownership. Named model is .38 Military & Police. Numbered model is 10, Sixth Engineering Change. From its D646000 range serial number, it was issued in 1974 under Chief René Daigneault, and served intermittently almost 30 years before the department switched to semi autos. Type is traditional swingout double and single action service revolver with transfer bar safety mechanism. Frame is K Medium Square Butt. Construction is entirely steel metal. Barrel is 4 inch one piece Heavy Barrel, pinned into the frame, with 1:18.75 five groove right hand rifling. Chambering is .38 Smith & Wesson Special caliber. Cylinder Capacity is six rounds. Sight is barrel integral serrated ramp front, with fixed notch frame integral rear. Cylinder release thumb latch is classic checkered serration concave. Ignition is hammer nose type firing pin on a model 64 .265 service width hammer, with matching serrated face service trigger. Markings are .38 S&W Special Ctg. right side of barrel, Smith & Wesson on the left side, standard Trade mark logo with Reg. U.S. Pat. Ofc. on the side plate, and Made in U.S.A. / Marcas Registradas / Smith & Wesson / Springfield, Mass. on the frame right side. Yoke number is 46000 range with matching grip frame number; Mod. 10-6inside the frame opposite the yoke, with no serialization inside or on the rear cylinder face. Import mark is under the barrel's muzzle end per the 1968 Gun Control Act. Grips are period correct factory magna service type. Dimensions are 9 inches overall length, 5 inches height, and 1.425 cylinder thickness. Weight empty is 33 ounces, centered at the trigger. Finish is bright blue laterals and lowers with matte upper, with factory replacement satin nickel hammer and color casehardened trigger; and with new replacement white polymer grip panels. Surface detractions are extensive, principally lateral holster wear on the barrel, and right side of frame; and backstrap toning. We rate this model 10 as Fair, perhaps Good Condition, 60 percent vicinity by our estimate, but photos ought to suffice for our distinguished shoppers to judge finish grade for themselves. Double action trigger pull is smooth and consistent 11 pounds vicinity, and the hammer travels 5 to 10 degrees on all six positions in single double action after the cylinder times; and 20 degrees on double action. Single action trigger pull measures a crisp original 2 3/4pounds. Lateral play to the cylinder is minimal with the trigger relaxed. With the trigger fully depressed, there is no lateral play whatsoever. Blast effect to the under side of the frame top strap directly above the barrel's forcing cone is moderate, a shallow etchy area that traverses 90% of the width of the top strap as the photos should show. Cylinder face to forcing cone gap measures a perfect .007. Bore and cylinder chambers are bright and clean. We sold model 10s new in 1974 for $119 to 149.00. We estimate Montreal PD paid $110 for this one. At the time, heavy barrel versions were prized and somewhat scarce. Replacement pricing on its current production descendant 10-14, however, is $739, and ours is a better revolver. We’re offering the Neighbourly Canadian Smith & Wesson Heavy Barrel 10-6 in the photos for only $ 269.00. Not transferable to civilian residents of California or Massachusetts. Any ammunition or personnel showing in our photos are Not included. Search terms Montreal PD will bring up all our SPM Revolvers on this venue.
