Fox SPE Grade 12ga. - RARE, FACTORY ORIGINAL, EJECTORS, BUTT PLATE
The Fox SP Grade was introduced in 1932 to ignite new life in the Fox double shotgun. The depression was on, and the Savage owned Fox factory needed new business. Just a year before, Winchester introduced the Model 21, a popular shotgun then and now. Fox saw the opportunity to make some cost saving changes in the appearance of the Fox with the new SP Grade. With its smooth-sided black frame, more rounded stock and action top, the gun appeared more as an English boxlock and similar to the new Model 21. The forend had an ebony inlay and a new shape, but internally it was exactly like every other Fox produced. There were few SP Grade guns made, and even fewer with ejectors (SPE). This fine Fox, sn35014, was made in 1939 and remains in fine factory original condition. The gun handles delightfully like most every Fox and is balanced right on the hinge pin and weighs 7lbs. 5oz. Simple in its lines and design, distinctively different from the standard Fox, every Fox fan should have an example of a SPE Grade Fox in their collection.
The 28" number 3 weight barrels have mirror bores, choke M/F (.023/.039, can be altered to your specs for $70 per barrel), internal bore diameter .729 both barrels, minimum wall thickness of 30 thousandths, no pits, dents, or major marks, 98% factory blue, 2 3/4" chambers, ribs tight, ejectors strong and timed, tight on breech face, a great set of barrels.
The action has simple line engraving, stippling on top to reduce glare, excellent screws, lever right of center, blued receiver 85%, double triggers crisp, trigger guard retains 95% factory blue, flat sided and graceful lines, mechanically excellent in every way.
The stock has an English flair to it, and in fact Fox had hired a group of English craftsman to work on the SPE project. Capped pistol grip and a forend with an ebony tip, new checkering pattern; all made to dress up the simple lines of the SPE Grade. The wood finish is in great shape with light handling marks, no splits, chips, or cracks, excellent checkering, 14 9/16" LOP to a special factory spurred butt plate only seen on the SP Grade guns, 2 3/4" drop at heel, 1 9/16" drop at comb, neutral cast, for nice shooting dimensions, excellent wood to metal fit, all well made and sound.
The Fox SPE is a rarely seen gun. I attend many large collector shows and even shooters who have admired Fox guns for decades are baffled when they look at the SPE. They are delightful shotguns and a great investment quality firearm at a reasonable price. Lightweight for a 12ga. and delightful in hand, a true Fox in different "attire", the SPE is a "must have" for the Fox enthusiast.
