In the realm of vintage American Double shotguns the small bore is king. Guns in 28 gauge and .410 bore are highly sought after, extremely low in factory production, a gas to shoot, and costly! Some are not aware that if you want a 28ga. American double that means either Parker or Ithaca. The other big makers did not make their guns in 28ga. The 28ga. is a much more realistic bird gun. If you have done any searching, you realize that the Parker 28ga., even in VH Grade, is well over $10K in cost, and that is a plain jane field grade. If you find a Parker Grade 2, or GH, in 28ga. it is closer to $30K. So how does one afford to own a classic vintage American double in 28ga.? Go to the Ithaca gun. The Ithaca NID is a well made gun and in Grade 2 has delightful wood, game scene engraving, fancy checkering, ebony inlay forend tip, and other fine features at a fraction of the cost of a Parker. Walt Snyder’s book has a count on the 28ga. guns and there are only 58 Grade 2 28ga. guns ever produced. THAT IS DEFINITELY RARE! This gun has lots of FACTORY ORIGINAL FINISH and has a wonderful feel in hand at 6lbs. 1oz. and balanced right on the hinge pin. This is truly an investment quality gun that has been carried, shot, and cared for since 1927 and has not been molested.
The 28” barrels retain 98% factory blue, excellent bores, choked .009/.021 (chokes can be altered to your specs for $70 per barrel), bore diameter factory at .551/.550, minimum wall thickness of 25 thousandths, 2 ½” chambers (chambers and forcing cones can be lengthened for $140 but not required to do so to shoot 2 ¾” shells. If you don’t know why, ask), ribs are tight and barrels ring, no dents or major dings or scratches, extractors, barrels tight on breech face and hinge like a new gun, all in excellent shape.
The action is nicely engraved in bird scenes and scroll, retaining 85% case color that has begun to turn brown. It is hard to photograph, but the case color looks better in person than in the photos. The action is tight with lever right of center, excellent screws, double triggers, trigger guard retains 85% niter blue, lettering clear and crisp, all in great condition.
The wood is nicely figured and retains excellent factory finish and checkering, no splits or cracks or repairs, capped pistol grip and splinter forend with ebony insert, LOP 14” to the factory buttplate, 2 5/8” drop at heel, 1 11/16” drop at comb, neutral cast, no splits, cracks, or repairs, excellent wood to metal fit. Ithaca had nice wood and checkering.
This is a great opportunity to own a vintage American double in the rare 28 gauge that still has condition and desirability. As a truly rare gun that has been shot, you are free to take it out after your favorite upland birds or break some clays with it and not have to worry about loosing any money. There are no more being made and the Grade 2 Ithaca 28ga. will not go down in value as long as you keep her in good condition. With the fancy wood and checkering and game scene engraving it is an amazing buy.
