Gun has a Chassepot 11 mm bolt action with mixed serial numbers, expertly modified to project something from a 1.25 inch (OD) smooth bore barrel. Barrel was most likely loaded from the breech, since gun has a break action mechanism, like a shotgun. Gun actions well. Wood stock is in poor shape, with at least 3 repairs, and some dry rot. However, gun appears complete. I believe that this was used for shooting line across from ship to ship or from dock to ship. The small weight line would be tied the heavy rope and pull across likely by hand. Possibly for shooting line to a man over board as well.
