This beautiful Elsie was manufactured in 1902 and still retains most of its original finish. Tight as the day it was made, with its regular weight frame, it has dropped ducks for me at 60 yards and they were dead on the water. The 28” barrels retain 90% fading original blue, excellent bores, .724 internal diameter Crown steel barrels with no pits or dents, extractors, 2 ¾” chambers with lengthened cones, M/F chokes (.022/.037), double ivory beads, ribs are tight and the barrels ring true and are tight on face.
The action has beautiful sharp engraving, 65% original case color, lever is right of center, barrels are tight on hinge as if new, double triggers that are crisp, trigger guard has 45% nitre blue, screws are good (top screw buggered). The pre-1913 engraving is graceful and some of the nicest you will find on a Grade 2.
The wood has wonderful figure, sharp clear checkering, no cracks or repairs, 13 ½” LOP to Pachmeyer pad, 2 ¾” drop at heel, 1 5/8” drop at comb. I usually shoot 14 ¼” LOP, but in cold weather this gun mounts just right. Keep that in mind when examining this gun. Forend checkering somewhat worn.
The gun weighs 7lbs. 6oz. and balances on the hinge pin. It has been a wonderful pheasant/duck gun and is excellent mechanically. These old Smiths are fully capable of shooting heavy loads and there are many non-toxic loads out now that will not damage these fine Classic American Doubles. The chokes are long and put patterns out far beyond modern guns, and are the classic waterfowl gun for this season. Refund only if item returned in same condition as shipped.
