SN #422236 was made in 1928. The top front of the receiver is marked with the Winchester Proof mark, below that mark is .30 ARMY ( which is 30-40 Krag caliber) It is in very fine condition with about 90% original blue on the barrel and about 95 % blue on the receiver. The wood is very good and has all of its original finish. The upper tang has the model 95 marking. As you know, Teddy Roosevelt used a '95 Carbine in the Spanish American War. Besides being highly collectable, these carbines are wonderful for big game, like moose, bear and Elk. Teddy used the 1895, in cal .405, on lions in Africa. Hard to find a nice 1895 Carbine,especially with a fine bore, like this one, especially since 72% of model 1895's (305,327) were shipped to Russia as military muskets.(They knew a good thing ) and only28% of all 1895 (120,554) were available for U.S. civilian purchase. Texas Rangers used 1895's in both rifle and carbine forms as did other lawmen. Besides Russian and US contracts, Mexican revolutionaries used it and Pancho Villa's best troops were equipped with it. A highlight for any collection and powerful enough for all North American game. These countries used 1895s; Russian Empire, Finland, Spanish Republic, Nazi Germany: (Issued to Volkssturm units), Mexico, United Kingdom, United States. So as you can surmise, they were popular but now now rare xt hey aebecause so many left the country of manufacture, never to return.
