From Russian ordnance houses where it has been refurbished and carefully stored now for 65 years comes this German Military 98 Mauser in 8x57 Mauser caliber in its original Laminated Military Stock, just like it was issued to the German Army in 1943 or 1944. Second digit of the Date Code is a misstamp; the bcd German Arsenal marking identifies this mauser as a Gustloff-Werke, Weimar produced weapon, and they were manufactured in 1943 and 1944. Waffenamt and proof marks are intact, but there has been some remarking at two places on the bolt surface and once on the floorplate. Bolt as well was scribed with the matching receiver number by the Victorious Russian Armorers, and the bluing has been arsenal refinished. Bore, chamber, and mechanism are Very Good to excellent. We detect no visible pitting in the bore; just roughness in the grooves at places. Scouring to the stock finish is only moderate. Note that there is superficial pitting above the chamber area on the barrel surface. We rate this rifle as Good to Very Good, since we estimate that 70 percent of its WWII Arsenal refinish is intact; photos, however, should suffice for prospective owners to judge finish grade for themselves.
