Here is an excellent representative of Smith & Wesson's state of the art service pistol chambered in .40 S&W. This is a 309700 variant of the M&P 40: Weight empty, no magazine, is 24 oz; weight fully loaded will be a bit over 35 ounces. Overall length is 7 1/2 inches; 5 1/2 inch height; and very nice thin 1.2 inch width. Barrel length is 4 1/4 inches with a 6.4 inch sight radius. This pistol, like all M&Ps, is full time double action, striker fire action, with a very consistent 6.5 pound trigger pull that only travels .300 inches from rest to fire and resets in only .14 inches. Frame is Zytel Polymer, and barrel and slide are Black Melonite finished stainless. Sights are factory luminous 3 dot Night sights, readily visible at dead midnight or high noon. The frame, as the photos show, incorporates a Picatinny Weaver type rail for light and laser mounting. The M&P series takes all comers for ease of handling, positive feel, and reliability and consistency under the most adverse field and combat situations. Two replacement grip frame backstraps are included for tailoring to different hand sizes and grip preferences. This variant does not have a Magazine Safety; that is, it will fire from a loaded chamber without having to have a magazine in battery. Magazines included are a total of two each 15 rounders. This particular specimen comes from a very brief tour of duty in the Chesapeake with the distinguished Officers of the Annapolis Police Department. It does not have its Fired Brass Case, but from its Special Order Code, it was manufactured in July of 2009. It is in its original box with both replacement grip straps, its red cable lock, instruction manual and never completed warranty card. Surface detractions are minimal, principally slide contact on the barrel surfaces. We rate it as Excellent in Box, 95 percent vicinity by our estimate, but photos ought to suffice for our distinguished shoppers to judge finish grade for themselves. Night Sights are full strength. This MP-40 is Excellent mechanically; bore, chamber, and mechanism are all bright, clean, and excellent. We estimate it has cycled 300 to 400 rounds of ammunition during its semi-annual qualification sessions, no rounds at all for an MP-40. Replacement pricing on the standard 2-Magazine 109700 variant in our area is upwards of $700, if a person can even find one.
