One of the best ones ever was Mr. Rip Fanning, born Innes B. Fanning, 1898 – 1982, who was better known as a Professional Baseball Manager in the middle part of the 20th Century. Mr. Rip served as gunsmith for Anderson Sporting Goods in neighboring Lexington, Tennessee, from his retirement from baseball in the late 1950s until the early 1970s. His refinishing work was his strong suite, more durable and better looking than factory in many cases. Here is a plain old Stevens Savage model 940 Single Shot that Mr. Rip made into a work of art some time in the 1960s for the Parker’s Crossroads cotton farmer who bought it new in the 1940s. Buttstock and forend are original walnut, and the 14 3/4 inch pull buttstock is crowned with a classic Red Head recoil pad. The .689 muzzle diameter full choke barrel and 5 pound 14 ounce weight makes that pad necessary. Surface finish is excellent throughout; and the bore, chamber, and mechanism are all bright, clean, and excellent. Center of gravity is at the rear of the forend, where it’s supposed to be. They don’t make them like this any more; in fact, they never did to begin with until Mr. Rip got hold of this fine old piece. We’re offering it for only $ 239.00.
