Following the lead of H. Koon Company’s Snake Charmer, introduced in the waning years of the Carter Administration, New England Firearms – now back in business as H&R 1871 – introduced this variant of the old 088 Topper in the waning years of the Clinton Administration. While it is slightly less expensive than its now-Turkish-made competitor, it is also slightly heavier, but more crucially, is made in the United States. Factory Specs are as follows: Mfg Item Number SB1SNK; Break Open Single Shot; Caliber :410 ga./ Barrel Length 20 inch with .385 Full Choke and 3 inch chamber. Overall length is only 34 1/4 inches. Weight 6 pounds. Stock is skeleton pistol grip with shell holders, 2 inch drop and comb and 2 1/2 inch drop at heel. Metal is weather-resistant satin nickel. This specimen comes from one of our favorite Oklahoma collectors, and surface detractions only amount to moderate dulling to the nickel finish. We rate it as Very Good, perhaps even Excellent, since no more than 10 to 15 percent of its finish is affected by our estimate. Photos, at any rate, ought to suffice for our distinguished shoppers to judge finish grade for themselves. It is certainly excellent mechanically; bore, chamber, and mechanism are all bright, clean, and excellent. Replacement price on these in our area, if a person can even find one, is upwards of $250.00 apiece.
